You've stocked up on your dog's favourite natural treats, but how long will they actually keep? Whether you're buying in bulk or building a treat box, understanding shelf life and storage is key to keeping treats fresh, safe, and tasty. Here's everything you need to know.
Shelf Life by Treat Type
Not all treats are created equal when it comes to longevity. Here's a general guide:
Air-Dried & Dehydrated Treats
These are among the longest-lasting natural treats. With moisture removed, bacteria have little to work with. Unopened, most air-dried treats will last 12–18 months from the production date. Once opened, store in a cool, dry place.
Dried Fish Treats (Sprats, Fish Skins)
Fish-based treats are naturally preserved by the drying process but can deteriorate if exposed to heat or humidity. Unopened: up to 12 months. Opened: use within 4–6 weeks, ideally stored in an airtight container away from direct sunlight.
Dried Ears, Tendons & Chews
Larger chews like ears, tendons, and trachea tend to have a shelf life of 12–24 months unopened, thanks to their low moisture content. Once your dog has started on one, any uneaten portion should be stored in a sealed bag and used within a few days.
Soft & Semi-Moist Treats
These have a shorter shelf life due to higher moisture content. Typically 6–12 months unopened, and once open, they should be used within 2–3 weeks and kept refrigerated if the packaging advises it.
How to Tell If a Treat Has Gone Off
Even within the stated shelf life, treats can deteriorate if stored poorly. Watch out for:
- Unusual smell - particularly with fish-based treats
- Visible mould - discard immediately and check nearby treats
- Change in texture - soft treats becoming slimy, or dry treats becoming sticky
- Discolouration - especially on meat-based treats
When in doubt, throw it out.
Storage Tips to Maximise Freshness
- Airtight containers are your best friend - resealable bags or glass jars work well. Or one of the gorgeous Scruffs Canisters!
- Cool, dark, and dry - avoid storing near the oven, dishwasher, or in direct sunlight
- Don't mix treat types in the same container - strong-smelling treats (like fish) can transfer odour
- Check the best before date on every pack and rotate stock so older treats are used first
Buying in the Right Quantities
One of the best ways to ensure freshness is to buy in quantities your dog will get through within the treat's open shelf life. Our 'Build a Box' is ideal for this - you choose exactly what goes in, so nothing sits unused. For a curated selection with great variety, the 40 Piece Natural Dog Treat Variety Bundle gives you a broad mix to work through at a comfortable pace.
